It's as rich in intertextual reference and period detail as you'd expect of the fanboy-auteur — and as self-indulgent as you might fear (especially if you watched his last film, the turgid Hateful Eight).
While Tarantino may not have taken home the Palme this time around, his film was without a doubt the hottest ticket in town, with punters jostling for position in lines that began to snake down the Croisette hours in advance of the premiere.
Originally touted as Tarantino's 'Manson family movie', Once Upon a Time is actually more of a mid-life crisis movie.
Leonardo DiCaprio plays Rick Dalton, an ageing TV cowboy whose alcoholism does not pair well with his growing suspicion that he's just not destined for movie stardom after all — that he's more 'has-been' than Steve McQueen.
His closest pal and drinking buddy is his long-time stuntman Cliff Booth (a character modelled on Hollywood daredevil Hal Needham, who frequently doubled for Burt Reynolds on screen), played by a leathery-looking Brad Pitt.
Cliff has been finding it hard to get work lately, primarily because he's known around town for killing his wife and getting away with it — a situation that both Rick and the film seem sympathetic to.
Tellingly, Cliff's wife only features in one brief flashback: she's shown lounging in a deckchair, whinging at Cliff as he stares off into space.
Both men sense that showbiz ain't what it used to be, and that there might not be major roles for them in this budding 'New Hollywood'.
It's worth pointing out that Tarantino, whose career is intertwined with that of the Weinsteins, is himself a middle-aged man working in the industry during a period of substantial change.
Perhaps Once Upon a Time can be read as speaking to some latent anxiety around remaining relevant.
On the cusp of a downward spiral, Rick is buoyed by the sight of his new neighbours: Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha), fresh from Rosemary's Baby, and his wife, the beautiful and famously ill-fated starlet Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie).
'I could be one pool party away from starring in a new Polanski movie,' Rick drunkenly reasons.
The Mansons, meanwhile, lurk at the fringes of the narrative. They make their first appearance early on, while Cliff is driving Rick home from set: a rag-tag hippie girl gang parades past the car, clutching the fruits of a dumpster-diving expedition.
One of them (Margaret Qualley) flashes a peace sign at Cliff, and he responds in kind. Oh, the irony.
Of course the promise of violence hangs over the film (this is Tarantino we're talking about), becoming weightier as it moves towards the historical date of the Tate murders.
But Once Upon a Time is relatively light on the ultra-violence so closely associated with the director — who spends most of the generous 161-minute runtime crosscutting between his main characters as they go about their daily lives.
Rick rehearses lines with his tape player and contemplates making spaghetti westerns in Italy (career advice from an agent, played by Al Pacino).
Cliff drives around town doing odd-jobs before going home to a dingy caravan, where his pitbull eagerly awaits her dinner.
Sharon parties at the Playboy Mansion and bops along to records in her Cielo Drive home.
In short, not much really happens. (Until it does.)
Tarantino seems more interested in showing off his lead actors — who take clear delight in hamming it up for him — and his loving recreation of Los Angeles landmarks (like Musso & Frank's and El Coyote) than he is in building dramatic tension.
This wouldn't be a problem, except for the fact that Rick and Cliff are unlikeable knuckleheads, and Robbie's Sharon is a free-spirited bimbo. These are not people I want to spend the day with. They're less offensive (as gendered stereotypes) than they are simply boring.
It's when members of the Manson family appear — grubby, shrewd, and menacing — that Once Upon a Time perks up, and acquires some of the mystique demanded by the subject matter.
It's enough to make you wish that Tarantino had made the Manson-centric movie he initially announced instead.

Once Upon a Time (Chinese: 三生三世十里桃花) is a Chinese romantic dramafantasy film produced by Alibaba Pictures and directed by Zhao Xiaoding and Anthony LaMolinara. It is based on the fantasy novel Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles Peach Blossoms, also known as To the Sky Kingdom,[5] by TangQi Gongzi.[1] The film stars Liu Yifei and Yang Yang.[6] Originally slated to be released in China on 21 July 2017,[7] the film's release date was later pushed back to 3 August 2017.[8]

Bai Qian is the youngest of five in the Bai family, a family of fox deities and the rulers of the mystical land, Qing Qiu. Bai Qian attends a party and there she runs into a little boy named Ah Li who steals her fan and Xuan Nu, the Demon Clan's Queen. Xuan Nu runs away after being defeated by Bai Qian. A man arrives looking for the boy and calls her Su Su, seeming to recognize her. The man is Ye Hua, her betrothed, Ah Li's father, and the Heaven Tribe's Crown Prince. Ye Hua and Ah Li travel to Qing Qiu shortly after and decides to stay with Bai Qian.

After an incident involving Ah Li drinking too much alcohol, Bai Qian and Ye Hua have an argue which results in Ye Hua leaving. While Bai Qian is with Zhe Yan, a family friend, a Princess of Heaven Tribe named Su Jin arrives in Qing Qiu to return Ah Li. Ah Li and Su Jin both happen to stumble into a cave and sees a man in an ice block. Ye Hua returns and says that Ah Li will be celebrating his birthday in the mortal realm. In the mortal realm, Ye Hua explains that three hundred years ago, he fell in love with a human named Su Su. Ye Hua soon realizes that Su Su and Bai Qian are the same person and wishes that Bai Qian could remember and forget her life as Su Su.
When she returns, Bai Qian visits the man in the cave who is the god of war and a highly respected god in the Heaven Tribe. Bai Qian was a disciple of Mo Yuan under the name Si Yin. Mo Yuan has been asleep for seventy thousand years after sealing the Demon King, Qing Cang.
Shortly after, Xuan Nu steals Mo Yuan. Bai Qian and Zhe Yan rush to the Demon Clan. Ye Hua shows up and helps them. After rescuing him, Bai Qian tells him that after Mo Yuan died, she brought him to Qing Qiu and waited for him to awake. Ye Hua and Bai Qian realize they have developed a mutual liking for each other and decide to wed. Su Jin reveals that the only reason Ye Hua wants to marry her is because Su Su had committed suicide. Filled with doubt, Bai Qian leaves him at the altar, although she soon returns, planning to take the soul-binding lamp from Ye Hua to speed up the process of her master waking up. After an argument, Ye Hua confesses that Su Su and Bai Qian are actually the same person and lends her the lamp.
Bai Qian's memories as Su Su are regained. Ye Hua had promised to marry Su Su in the Heaven Clan but instead abandoned her. Su Jin, who was jealous, blamed Su Su for blinding Su Jin. Su Su jumped off of the Execution Platform after believing that Ye Hua wouldn't believe her innocence. When Bai Qian landed in Qing Qiu, she drank an amnesia potion to forget her life as Su Su. Nai Nai, Bai Qian/Su Su's maid in the Heaven Palace, recalls the events differently. All the time that Ye Hua abandoned her, he was trying to get permission from the heavenly lord to marry her. Ye Hua even took the lightning punishment that was meant for her as punishment.
Upset, Bai Qian returns to Qing Qiu, giving specific orders not to let in Ye Hua. For seven days and nights, Bai Qian refuses to see him or welcome him into Qing Qiu. At the Bell, Su Jin awakens Qing Cang. Ye Hua rushes to go fight Qing Cang. Bai Qian learns of the news and goes to help him, but she is too late. Ye Hua sacrifices himself to lock up Qing Cang. Ye Hua falls into a freezing river and floats away under the ice. Ye Hua watches Bai Qian and sinks to the bottom, his last wish being that she could forget him for all the pain that he has cause her. Later on, Mo Yuan awakens. As Bai Qian runs to finally see her master, she is stopped by Ye Hua/Mo Yuan standing there and asking her to come closer.

Once Upon A Time Book
On 16 June 2015, it was announced that Liu Yifei will play the leading role of Bai Qian / Si Yin / Su Su.[9] The role of Ye Hua, the male lead, was announced to be portrayed by Yang Yang on 29 October.[10]
Principal photography started on 18 December 2015, and wrapped in 21 March 2016.[11][12] The dress design of the film was Lawrence Xu.[13]

The film is scheduled for release in China (3 August), Vietnam (4 August), Cambodia (4 August), North America (11 August), Myanmar (11 August), Malaysia (17 August), UK (18 August), Singapore (24 August), Australia (31 August), Germany, Thailand, South Korea (in September) and Japan.[citation needed]
Box office[edit]
The film's opening day gross was CN¥175 million.[14] It grossed a total of US$82,3 million in China.[15]Variety reported that Once Upon a Time would open in North American screens on 11 August 2017.[16] It grossed US$485,728 in North America.[17] Wanda Vietnam company reported that Once Upon a Time have collected VND10 billion (US$440,000) after 9 days released, it can be considered very impressive in box office Vietnam.[18] It collected US$13,732 in UK, and was last reported to have collected US$54,932 in Australia.[19]
